Product Description

At-home Vitamin D blood test

What is a Vitamin D Test?

A vitamin D test measures the level of vitamin D in your blood to make sure you have enough for your body to work well. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and teeth and keep your muscles, nerves, and immune system working normally. .

Although some foods are rich in vitamin D, like oily fish, our bodies only roughly absorb 10% of vitamin D from this source and the other 90% from our bodies. Having low levels of vitamin D is a common problem that can lead to bone disorders and other medical problems. Vitamin D testing can let you know if you need to increase your vitamin D levels.

Why do you need a vitamin D test?

A vitamin D insufficiency (mildly low levels of vitamin D) usually doesn't cause symptoms. So, you may need a test if you have a high risk for developing a deficiency because you:

  • Are older than 65. As you age, your skin is less able to make vitamin D from sunlight.
  • Rarely expose your skin to sunshine because you stay indoors, cover up outside, use sunscreen, or live where there is little sunlight
  • Have dark skin, which makes less vitamin D from sunlight
  • Have had weight loss surgery
  • Have obesity
  • Have a condition that makes it difficult to absorb nutrients in food, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and celiac disease
  • Have kidney or liver disease that affects your ability to change vitamin D into a form your body can use
  • Take certain medicines that affect your vitamin D levels

A lack of vitamin D can cause serious problems for babies and children. They may need a screening test for:

  • Babies that are mainly fed breastmilk. Breastmilk is low in vitamin D (All babies need vitamin D supplements shortly after birth, unless they are fed only formula, which contains vitamin D.)
  • Children with darker skin who live in areas with little sunlight
  • Children with diets low in vitamin D
If you are taking vitamin D supplements to increase your vitamin D level, you also need a test to see if your vitamin D levels are improving.

Will I need to do anything to prepare for the test?

You don't need any special preparations for a vitamin D test.

Are there any risks to the test?

There is very little risk to having a blood test. You may have slight pain or bruising at the spot where the needle was put in, but most symptoms go away quickly.

Principle:

The Vitamin D Rapid Test is for the semi-quantitative detection of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25 (OH) D) in human fingerstick Whole blood at a cut-off concentration of 30 ± 4ng/mL. This assay provides a preliminary diagnostic test result and can be used to screening for Vitamin D deficiency.

TEST PROCEDURE:

1. Wash your hands with soap and rinse with clear warm water.
2. Bring the pouch to room temperature before opening it. Open the pouch, remove the test cassette and place it on a clean and level surface. Run the test within
one hour and best results will be obtained if the test is performed immediately after opening the foil pouch.
Remove the dropper, buffer vial, lancet and Alcohol pad, place them close to the test cassette.
3. Carefully pull off and dispose the released cap of the lancet.
4. Use the provided Alcohol pad to clean the fingertip of the middle or ring finger as the puncture site. Allow to air dry.
5. Press the lancet, on the side from where the cap was extracted; the tip retracts automatically and safely after use. Massage the hand without touching the puncture site by massaging the hand towards the fingertip of the middle or ring finger to be punctured.
6. Keeping the hand down massage the end that was pricked to obtain a blood drop.
7. Without squeezing the capillary dropper bulb, put it in contact with the blood. The blood migrates into the capillary dropper through the capillarity to the line indicated on the capillary dropper.
You may massage again your finger to obtain more blood if the blood does not reach the indicated line. Avoid of air bubbles.
8. Release the blood collected into the Specimen well (S) of the cassette, by squeezing the dropper bulb.
9. Wait for the blood to be totally dispensed in the well. Unscrew the cap of the buffer bottle and add 2 drops of buffer into the Buffer well (B) of the cassette and start a timer.
10. Wait for the colored line(s) to appear. Read results at 10 minutes. Compare the T line intensity with "Vitamin D Color card" provided with the kit to get the Vitamin D level in your blood. Do not interpret the result after 20 minutes.at-Home Vitamin D Blood Test
